The United Nations has released a report on the displacement of a large number of people in West Bengal and Odisha due to the severe cyclonic storm ‘Amfan’, due to incidents of natural disaster, conflict and violence in the country in the last year 2019. More than 50 lakh people have been reported to be internally displaced.
In the report titled ‘Lost at Home’ of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), about 330 lakh new cases of displacement have been registered all over the world last year. Of these, about 250 lakh displacement natural calamities and 80.5 lakh cases were related to incidents of conflict and violence.
According to the report, of the 50,37,000 internal displacement figures recorded in India in 2019, 50,18,000 cases were related to natural disasters and 19,000 cases of incidents of conflict and violence. According to UNICEF report, India, Philippines and China are very much affected by natural disasters, due to which millions of people are displaced. In these countries, displacement from natural disasters accounts for 69 percent of the world.
